BOBBY’S WEEKLY REPORT 27th OCTOBER 2008
This Thursday the next round of matches in the men’s Super League are to be held. Glenrothes A have a home fixture against Lochgelly in the CISWO, while Earn Valley play hosts to Glenrothes B at the Cycle Tavern, Auchtermuchty. The remaining fixture sees Cowdenbeath with a home tie against Dunfermline at the Junction Bar.
The first round of matches in the women’s Super League has seen the CISWO record a 4-1 victory against East Neuk, while Bowhill Club recorded a similar win in their “away” fixture with the Railway Tavern’s A team. The highest average was by I.Docherty (CISWO) with 15.71. The result from the match between Station Hotel, Thornton and the Railway Tavern B team is not yet in.
Last Saturday the national finals of the Scottish Doubles were held in Bannockburn Social Club with five pairs from Fife representing the county.
In the women’s draw were Alison Duncan & Pam O’Brien and Brenda Hunter & Agnes Gallagher and both pairs lost out in the first round. Pam and Alison took their tie with C.Mathieson & M.Hay (Perthshire) to a deciding fifth leg where they were unfortunate to lose while Brenda and Agnes lost their match 3-0 against competition favourites Janette Higgins & Lynn Cowan from Lanarkshire.
In the men’s, Colin Hepplewhite & Neil Brunton made it through to the second round before making their exit, but Stewart Rattray & Rab Shaw made it through to the third round, as did Gordon Donnelly & Alan Small. Stewart and Rab won through courtesy of two 3-0 wins, while Gordon and Alan won their previous rounds 3-2 and 3-1.
Stewart and Rab bowed out in the last sixteen to Mike Veitch & George Dalglish following a fifth leg decider. Gordon and Alan progressed to the quarterfinals though following a win against the East Stirling pairing of Kimin Smith and Don Haughton. In the quarters they won their game against C.Robertson & G.Keith from Grampian without dropping a leg to make it through to the semi-finals. In the semi’s they were paired against Ian Jolly & Kevin Whyte (Tay Valley) and took an early 2-0 lead but the Tay Valley throwers fought back to level at 2-2 to take the match into a deciding leg. This was where the Fifer’s interest in the tournament faded though as Ian and Kevin won the leg to stake their place in the final.
First final up was the women’s and former Fife player Kirsty Burns, now playing with Tay Valley, with her partner Kate Smith lost out 3-0 against I.Hogarth & L.Marshall (Borders). The next final saw Mike Veitch & George Dalglish win by the same score line against Ian & Kevin to take the men’s title.
